艾拉里·昆恩②

　　纽约市警理察·昆恩每回遇上棘手的案件，都会与自己的儿子商量，这时候，埃勒里·奎因(Ellery Queen)就会亲赴现场，以精湛的推理手法解决案件！艾拉里身高超过一米八，喜欢配戴无框的单片眼镜。热衷搜集旧书，尤其是稀有的古善本。他推理讲求纯粹的逻辑思考，而且，没有把握绝不妄下结论，只摆出一付狂妄自大的臭架子。周遭的人对此深恶痛绝，但他的父亲理察对他还是信心十足，因为每次的案子最后还是由艾拉里解决。虽然故事中设定为由艾拉里将自己处理过的事件公诸于世，然而其实“艾拉里·昆恩”是由F·达理于M·李里两名作家为联合作推理小说而想出的笔名。（我推荐的作品为《埃及十字架之谜》）
　　艾勒里'昆恩其实是两个人，一个是佛列德瑞克'丹奈（Frederic Dannay），一个是曼佛瑞'李（Manfred Lee），这是一对堂兄弟，艾勒里'昆恩这个名字是他们联手创造出来的。
　　而这个名字，据推理评论家安东尼'布契所言，「艾勒里'昆恩，即是美国推理小说的同义词。」
　　所谓推理小说的同义词指的是，从1928年首部长篇《罗马帽子的秘密》问世开始，昆恩便逐步接收了范达因美国首席古典推理大师的位置，以每年一至两部的速度稳定出书，一路贯穿到七○年代，统治时间长达半世纪之久；而昆恩扮演的可不只是书写者而已，他们（因为有两个人，连体婴）同时办杂志，编选集，搞广播和电视，不让古典推理征服全国势不罢休——他们既是王者，也是传教士和大使。
　　做为推理小说家的昆恩，不以创新诡计取胜，他们最大的力量来源，是通过对过往推理名著的整理和深彻理解，总结前代大师之精髓而集其大成，使小说呈现一种高度成熟期的稳定水平，和读者的基本需求配合得很好——昆恩的作品是基本古典推理迷极佳的选择。
